C Block, The Delhi High Court, New Delhi
Nation Building
India must ensure social and economic equality for its citizens.
The Delhi High Court embarked on an ambitious plan in 2013 to increase capacity by 40 percent in four years and 60 percent by 2020. A master plan was created to redevelop, build afresh, and reallocate functions. The task was to create a visual vocabulary that could bridge 500 years of discordance with a harmonious note.
The building uses a combination of sand-blasted Dholpur stone and Red Agra stone to blend with the adjacent NGMA. The upper floors recede in a stepped manner, and the top is crowned with a hovering a pergola that creates a distinctive silhouette. The cantilevers accomplish the twin objectives of creating a play of light and shade with the building and also playing alone its scale.
The new ‘C’ block has 15 courtrooms, 16 judge chambers, and 9 junior registrar chambers. It also provides facilities like discussion and sitting rooms for lawyers and a separate room for lady members.
