Technology and Invention through built volume
NIT, Delhi Conceived as the first vehicle-free campus built on the principals of sustainability and design innovation, the NIT Delhi campus is sited on over 2 lakh sq m of site area on the outskirts of Delhi. Being designed as the future of India, the campus aims to create an environment that will invoke the spirit of innovation, technology and invention through its built volume, hence inspiring the students. Understanding national and global campuses through in-depth research, the master plan for NIT is developed as per the evolving needs of the university over 25-30 years, and is driven by the focussed themes of crafing a unique, educational/research environment in the technology/engineering domain for about 5000-8000 students.
Optimizing the scale of the 56 acres site, in order to plan a vehicle-free campus, the intent was to ensure that distances could be covered by foot and that one would not really require any vehicles to commute from one building to another internally. A square module of 1 km X 1 km was hence derived, that was divided into four equal parts; one-fourth of this square would be approximately the size of the site.
