Urban Green Campus master plan envisioned a circular crucible of inspired learning

Located on the Delhi Panipat expressway, the master plan for NIT Delhi seeks to retain the openness and greenery of its counterparts from across the country. Envisioned over an area of 56 acres, the greenfield master plan was conceived as a “Crucible of Inspired learning”. The campus follows a green ‘centre-and-ringed periphery’ concept with a 50m/40m/30m wide green belt. Designed for a maximum capacity of 8000 students, the campus is scheduled to grow over 25 years in capacity. Envisioned to be built over 4 phases, the campus will eventually grow into 24 departments or schools.

The programs are zoned into academic, administration, residential and sports facilities. With the sports facilities inside the central greens, the vehicle-free campus utilises an 8m wide pergola to connect important parts within a maximum walking distance of 500 metres.

Among other amenities, the nucleus of the campus will consist of a library, computer centre, lecture Hall complex and an innovation centre. The departments are categorised into small, medium & large, depending upon their size. Envisioned within 8 towers, the three types are accommodated in one tower by stacking them in a mix. As a principle, each department retains its sovereignty but equally shares facilities such as lecture halls, laboratories and department libraries. To achieve this, a matrix-based design allows towers (G+8) to connect through bridges at three levels to enable smooth movement horizontally and vertically.
