The Power of Placemaking — Conceptualising Spaces Representing a Developing Nation.

In the tapestry of a developing nation, public spaces are the threads that bind communities to serve as like-minded entities, fostering social interaction, civic engagement, and cultural exchange. At Design Forum International (DFI), we believe in the transformative power of placemaking, crafting spaces that spark national dialogue and strengthen the fabric of Indian society.

Imagine a bustling commercial square buzzing with lively discussions, luxury business centres bringing about ease in conducting business. a foot-over bridge where diverse paths intertwine, or state-of-the-art railway stations and airports rendering upscaled tourist experiences. These are not just concrete structures but catalysts for contextuality that enable a deeper sense of ownership, understanding, and, ultimately, nation-building.

Encouraging Social Interaction
Well-designed public spaces offer a platform for citizens to break free from their digital silos and engage in meaningful conversations. For instance, the skywalks developed at ITO in Delhi and Dakshineshwar in Kolkata aim to transform social interaction by constructing a physical layout for mobility infrastructure. They also aim to offer a sustainable alternative network for commuters, redefining how people travel.
Fostering Civic Engagement
Public spaces catalyse civic engagement, fostering active involvement in national development. For instance, the 'C' block at The Delhi High Court in New Delhi has a total of 15 courtrooms and 9 registrars' courts. It also has specific areas for attorneys, such as discussion rooms and chambers for Judges and Junior registrars. There are separate discussion rooms for female board members, empowering them to shape the nation's legal landscape and facilitating the national capital with an able judicial arm.

Inclusivity and Connectivity at the core
Thoughtful design prioritises inclusivity and accessibility. The Eldeco Centre in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, is a mixed-use urban intervention that ensures maximum inclusivity and comfort for people with disabilities. The building has been designed without any sudden elevation changes that require steps. Further, the retail hub is strategically located at the convergence of multiple MRTS modes in the site’s vicinity, thus maximising connectivity.
Design as a Bridge
The role of design goes beyond functionality; it shapes emotions and perceptions. Public spaces must resonate with the community by incorporating elements of local heritage and celebrating diverse artistic expressions. The Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station in Kerala is being redeveloped to honour India's architectural heritage. It will incorporate local elements such as cobbled arches and elephant busts, representing the city's cultural significance and tourism.

Placemaking is not just about infrastructure and development; it's about creating spaces that nurture a sense of shared identity and belonging. At DFI, we believe that through thoughtful placemaking, we can design public spaces that spark meaningful conversations, promote tolerance, and build a more inclusive and vibrant India. Through design, let’s work together to create a stronger nation through dialogue and collaboration.

As architectural boundaries continue to be pushed, luxury housing in India will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of architectural innovation, offering residents a life of unmatched luxe and style while enabling community living.
